The greatest hit on Broadway, the winner of eight Tony Awards, an American musical based on a great classic of literature, comes to the Budapest Broadway!
For many seasons now the Budapest Operetta Theatre has been walking its own path in presenting great historical or literary classics. A true gem of world literature, Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening fits the pattern perfectly, its American rock musical adaptation winning the most (eight) Tony Awards in the recent history of this prestigious award in 2007, with the one for best musical among them.
Spring Awakening written by the singer and song writer Duncan Sheik and the librettist Steven Sater tells the story of young girls and boys coming of age and their issues: first love, suppressed emotions, deep inflicted wounds. Sheik and Sater's songs highlight the problems of adolescents, volatile youth, tempestuous love stories and a rebelling relation of no compromises with the adult world.
The musical's central character is Melchior, an excellent student and his anxios friend, Moritz and Wendla, a girl just turning into a woman. And although the piece is set in the past, the music is fresh, modern and exciting!
The Hungarian premiere is happened parallel to the London Westend opening. This is going to be a unique production, for our theatre got the right to present the first non-replica version of the show.
